.38 Special
.38 Special, formed in Jacksonville, Florida, blended Southern rock's guitar-driven foundation with more radio-friendly pop-rock songwriting, giving the band significant mainstream commercial success throughout the early 1980s beyond Southern rock's traditional core audience. Their 1982 hit "Caught Up in You" and other singles reflected the band's successful navigation of Southern rock's stylistic transition toward more polished, arena-rock-friendly production as the genre's original 1970s wave gave way to 1980s mainstream rock radio conventions. The band's twin-guitar attack and their sustained presence on mainstream rock radio throughout the 1980s helped keep Southern rock's core musical elements commercially viable during a period when the genre's original pioneering bands had either disbanded or declined in popularity. Their combination of genuine Southern rock instrumental roots and their successful commercial adaptation to 1980s mainstream rock radio has made .38 Special one of the more commercially significant bands to carry the genre's sound into that later era.
VS
Molly Hatchet
Molly Hatchet, formed in Jacksonville, Florida in the mid-1970s, built their sound around a heavier, more aggressive guitar attack than some of their Southern rock contemporaries, giving the band a sound that bridged Southern rock with the harder-edged rock and early metal sensibilities emerging during that era. Their 1979 song "Flirtin' with Disaster" became one of the band's most enduringly popular tracks, and its combination of driving guitar work and Danny Joe Brown's powerful vocal delivery established Molly Hatchet as one of the more commercially successful second-wave Southern rock bands. The band's striking album cover artwork, frequently featuring fantasy and mythological imagery from artist Frank Frazetta, gave Molly Hatchet a distinctive visual identity that set them apart from Southern rock's more typically understated album art conventions. Their combination of a heavier guitar sound within the Southern rock tradition and their distinctive fantasy-influenced visual branding has made Molly Hatchet one of the more musically and visually distinctive bands within the genre's broader history.
