4505 Burgers & BBQ
4505 Burgers & BBQ grew out of 4505 Meats, the whole-animal butchery and sausage company chef Ryan Farr started from his own San Francisco apartment in 2009 after leaving his post as executive chef at Fifth Floor, a fine-dining restaurant inside the Hotel Palomar. Farr built the meat company on serious butchery technique first, selling out of a stand at the Ferry Building farmers market before the burger and barbecue side of the business grew into its own brick-and-mortar restaurant in the NoPa neighborhood. That charcuterie background shows up directly in the burger: a butcher's understanding of fat ratios, grind, and seasoning applied to a thick, well-charred patty built with the same care Farr brought to sausage-making rather than treated as a separate, lesser discipline. The burger has become one of the restaurant's signature orders, served alongside a full barbecue menu of smoked meats that reflects the same whole-animal philosophy the company was founded on. Farr's path from a fine-dining kitchen to farmers-market butchery to a full restaurant is a genuinely unusual one for a San Francisco burger spot, and it's part of what separates 4505's burger from more conventional gourmet or diner-style competitors on this list — this is a kitchen that came to the burger by way of serious meat science rather than the other way around. That the business grew organically from a single apartment operation into a Ferry Building stand and then a standalone NoPa restaurant, without ever losing the butchery-first identity that started it, says something about how deliberately Farr built the brand rather than rushing straight to a storefront. For a San Francisco cheeseburger list, 4505 Burgers & BBQ is the essential "butcher's burger" entry — a thick, well-seasoned patty from a chef who built his reputation on whole-animal technique before he ever opened a burger counter.
VS
Super Duper Burgers
Super Duper Burgers opened its first location in San Francisco's Castro neighborhood in 2010, founded by Eddie Sarti and restaurateur Adriano Paganini, whose Back of the House group has since built out a wide roster of San Francisco restaurants. Sarti has said he never expected the concept to expand much past that first Castro storefront, but Super Duper has since grown into a genuine Bay Area mini-chain built on a straightforward premise: fast-food format, real ingredients. The core burger is a thin, hard-smashed patty made from daily-ground, all-natural, vegetarian-fed Brandt Beef, cooked quickly on a hot griddle for a crisp, caramelized edge, then finished simply with American cheese and classic fixings. The company's own tagline — "fast food burgers, slow food values" — sums up the whole pitch: counter-service speed and pricing, without the corner-cutting on where the meat actually comes from. That positioning filled a real gap in San Francisco's burger scene when it launched — a fast-casual option genuinely built around quality sourcing rather than a gourmet sit-down concept charging accordingly, at a moment when most "better burger" options in the city still meant a real wait and a real check. Super Duper's growth across multiple San Francisco neighborhoods and beyond suggests that gap was as real as it looked. The chain has stayed close to its original format even as it's expanded — a tight menu, quick counter service, and a consistent smash-style patty rather than chasing novelty toppings or seasonal specials. For a San Francisco cheeseburger list, Super Duper Burgers is the essential "fast-casual done right" entry — a thin, smashed, sustainably sourced patty that proved quality and speed didn't have to be a trade-off in a city that expects both.
