48 Hrs.
48 Hrs., released in 1982, is widely credited as one of the foundational films establishing the buddy cop genre's basic template, pairing Nick Nolte's gruff police detective with Eddie Murphy's fast-talking convict temporarily released to help track down a dangerous criminal. Murphy's breakout film performance, delivered at just 21 years old in his feature film debut, immediately established him as a major comedic film star, and his rapid-fire comedic delivery combined with genuine dramatic tension set much of the template for the genre's mismatched-personality dynamic. The film's willingness to directly address racial tension between its two mismatched leads, including a memorable bar scene in which Murphy's character confronts a room of hostile white patrons, gave 48 Hrs. a level of social commentary uncommon in the more purely comedic buddy cop films that followed in its wake. 48 Hrs.'s combination of genuine action-thriller tension and Murphy's star-making comedic performance established much of the basic structural and tonal template that subsequent buddy cop films throughout the 1980s and '90s continued to build directly upon.
VS
Bad Boys
Bad Boys, released in 1995, paired Will Smith and Martin Lawrence as mismatched Miami narcotics detectives, and the film's combination of Michael Bay's kinetic, explosion-heavy action directing style with Smith and Lawrence's comedic chemistry established both actors as major action-comedy stars. The film marked Michael Bay's feature directorial debut, and its high-energy visual style, including rapid editing and elaborate action set pieces, established much of the visual template Bay continued developing across his subsequent, considerably higher-budget action filmmaking career. Smith's performance helped transition his public persona from primarily a television and music star into a genuine leading man for major theatrical action films, launching the sustained run of blockbuster success that defined much of his subsequent film career throughout the late 1990s and 2000s. Bad Boys's massive commercial success launched a multi-film franchise spanning multiple decades, and the original film's combination of stylish action direction and genuine comedic chemistry between its two leads established a commercially successful template that Bay and the franchise's later installments continued building on.
