A Few Good Men
A Few Good Men, released in 1992 and written by Aaron Sorkin based on his own stage play, follows military lawyers defending two Marines charged with murder at Guantanamo Bay, building toward a climactic courtroom confrontation between Tom Cruise's junior defense attorney and Jack Nicholson's senior officer. Nicholson's delivery of the line "You can't handle the truth!" during his climactic cross-examination testimony became one of the most widely quoted and referenced lines in courtroom drama history, and the scene is frequently cited as a benchmark for dramatic courtroom confrontation. Sorkin's rapid, dialogue-dense screenwriting style, later closely associated with his subsequent television and film work including The West Wing and The Social Network, established much of his signature verbal pacing in this relatively early screenwriting credit. The film's exploration of military justice, chain of command, and the tension between institutional loyalty and individual moral responsibility gave A Few Good Men a substantive thematic core beneath its crowd-pleasing courtroom theatrics, and it remains one of the most frequently referenced legal dramas in American popular culture.
VS
Philadelphia
Philadelphia, released in 1993, follows a gay lawyer with AIDS who sues his law firm for wrongful termination after being fired due to his diagnosis, and it became one of the first major mainstream Hollywood films to directly address the AIDS epidemic and anti-gay discrimination as its central subject. Tom Hanks's performance in the lead role won him the Academy Award for Best Actor, and his significant physical transformation to depict his character's declining health due to AIDS, combined with the film's direct, sympathetic treatment of its gay protagonist, was considered a significant risk for a major studio release at the time. The film's release came during a period when AIDS remained heavily stigmatized in mainstream American culture, and Philadelphia's mainstream commercial success helped bring broader public attention and sympathy to AIDS patients' experiences and the discrimination many faced during the epidemic's height. Bruce Springsteen's original song "Streets of Philadelphia," written for the film, won the Academy Award for Best Original Song, and the film's combination of legal drama structure and its direct engagement with AIDS-era discrimination made it one of the most culturally significant legal dramas of the 1990s.
