Acadia National Park
Acadia National Park, established in 1919 as the first national park east of the Mississippi River, sits primarily on Mount Desert Island off the coast of Maine, its rocky Atlantic shoreline and forested granite peaks a genuinely different landscape from the more famous western parks that dominate most Americans' mental image of the park system. The park owes its existence substantially to wealthy summer residents, including members of the Rockefeller family, who donated large portions of their own private landholdings on Mount Desert Island specifically to ensure the area's preservation rather than its development into private estates, an unusually philanthropy-driven origin story compared with most western parks carved from federal land. John D. Rockefeller Jr. personally funded and helped design the park's roughly 45 miles of carriage roads, a network of crushed-stone paths built specifically to be free of automobiles, still used today for biking, hiking, and horseback riding exactly as Rockefeller originally intended when he financed their construction in the early 20th century. Acadia's combination of being the first national park established east of the Mississippi, its philanthropy-driven founding by wealthy summer residents, and Rockefeller's still-intact car-free carriage road network has made it one of the most distinctively founded and historically layered national parks in the entire system.
VS
Grand Canyon National Park
The Grand Canyon was carved over roughly six million years by the Colorado River cutting through layered rock, exposing nearly two billion years of Earth's geologic history in its canyon walls — a span of visible rock strata that's made the canyon one of the most significant geological teaching sites anywhere in the world. President Theodore Roosevelt, who visited in 1903 and reportedly called it "the one great sight which every American should see," used his executive authority to declare it a national monument in 1908 over the objections of mining and business interests who wanted to develop the area commercially, a designation Congress later upgraded to full national park status in 1919. The canyon spans roughly 277 miles long, up to 18 miles wide, and over a mile deep at its most dramatic points, a scale so vast that it's genuinely difficult to photograph in a way that conveys its actual size, a common observation among first-time visitors who often describe the canyon as looking smaller in photos than it does from the rim in person. The Grand Canyon's combination of nearly two billion years of exposed geologic history, Theodore Roosevelt's direct personal advocacy for its protection, and its almost incomprehensible physical scale has made it one of the most visited and universally recognized natural landmarks not just in the national park system but in the entire world.
