Activision Blizzard
Activision was founded in 1979 by four former Atari programmers, making it the first-ever independent third-party video game developer, formed specifically because Atari refused to credit or compensate its programmers as individual creators of hit games. Blizzard Entertainment, founded separately in 1991, built some of the most influential franchises in PC gaming history, including Warcraft, Diablo, and StarCraft, with World of Warcraft becoming the most successful subscription-based massively multiplayer online game ever released after its 2004 launch. Activision and Blizzard merged in 2008 to form Activision Blizzard, later adding the mobile gaming giant King, maker of Candy Crush Saga, before Microsoft completed its roughly $69 billion acquisition of the combined company in October 2023. Activision Blizzard's combination of Activision's status as gaming's first independent developer and Blizzard's genre-defining World of Warcraft has made it one of the most historically significant company mergers in video game history.
VS
Xbox (Microsoft Gaming)
Microsoft entered the console gaming market with the original Xbox in 2001, its first major push into console hardware after decades as primarily a PC software company, aiming to establish a foothold in living rooms against Sony and Nintendo's established console dominance. Xbox Live, launched alongside the original Xbox, became one of the first major unified online multiplayer and digital storefront services on a console, helping establish online console gaming as a mainstream, subscription-supported category well ahead of most competitors. Microsoft significantly expanded its gaming footprint through major acquisitions, including Bethesda Softworks' parent company ZeniMax Media in 2021 and Activision Blizzard in 2023 for roughly $69 billion, one of the largest acquisitions in gaming industry history, and the company has increasingly emphasized its Xbox Game Pass subscription service as a core strategy. Xbox's combination of its pioneering Xbox Live online service and its historic $69 billion Activision Blizzard acquisition has made it one of the most strategically aggressive companies in the modern gaming industry.
