Adidas
Adidas was founded in Germany in 1949 by Adolf "Adi" Dassler, following a bitter split with his brother Rudolf, who went on to found rival sportswear company Puma in the very same small town, creating a decades-long sibling rivalry that split the local community. The company's shoes were famously worn by Jesse Owens at the 1936 Berlin Olympics (before the Adidas brand name officially existed, under Dassler's earlier shoe company) and later by numerous Olympic athletes, establishing an early association with elite athletic performance that shaped the brand's identity for decades. Adidas's distinctive three-stripe logo became one of the most recognized brand marks in sports apparel, and the company's later expansion into hip-hop and streetwear culture, notably through its partnership with Run-D.M.C. in the 1980s, demonstrated an early and influential crossover between athletic brands and mainstream youth culture. Adidas's combination of its origins in a historic sibling rivalry with Puma and its pioneering crossover into hip-hop culture has made it one of the most globally significant athletic apparel brands in the industry.
VS
Under Armour
Under Armour was founded in 1996 by former University of Maryland football player Kevin Plank, who developed the company's first product, a moisture-wicking compression T-shirt, after growing frustrated with sweat-soaked cotton undershirts during football practices. Plank reportedly sold his early shirts directly out of the trunk of his car to college and professional football teams, building the company from the ground up through direct relationships with athletes and equipment managers rather than traditional retail distribution channels. Under Armour's rapid growth throughout the 2000s and 2010s established it as a genuine third major competitor to Nike and Adidas in the American sportswear market, driven significantly by its performance-fabric technology and high-profile athlete endorsement deals. Under Armour's combination of its founder's frustration-driven product origin story and its rapid rise into a genuine top-tier sportswear competitor has made it one of the most significant American athletic apparel brands of its era.
