ADT
ADT traces its origins to 1874, when it was founded as American District Telegraph, initially providing telegraph-based alarm signaling services decades before modern electronic home security existed, making it one of the oldest continuously operating security companies in the country. The company built its reputation around professionally monitored alarm systems connected to dedicated monitoring centers staffed around the clock, a model requiring long-term contracts and professional installation that became the industry standard approach for decades before newer self-installed alternatives emerged. ADT's iconic yard signs and window decals, warning potential intruders that a property is protected by ADT monitoring, became one of the most widely recognized pieces of home security branding in the country, frequently used even by properties actually protected by other systems as a general deterrent signal. ADT's combination of its 19th-century telegraph-signaling origins and its historically dominant position in professionally monitored home security has made it one of the most enduringly recognized security brands in American history.
VS
Ring
Ring was founded in 2013 by Jamie Siminoff under the name "Doorbot," built around a genuinely novel product concept: a video doorbell letting homeowners see and speak with visitors remotely through a smartphone app, addressing the specific problem of missed deliveries and unknown visitors. Siminoff famously pitched the product on the television show "Shark Tank" in 2013 and was rejected by every investor on the panel, a rejection that became widely referenced years later after Amazon acquired the rebranded Ring company for approximately $1 billion in 2018. Ring's Neighbors app, letting users share footage and safety concerns with others in their local area, became a significant and sometimes controversial expansion of the company's mission, drawing both praise for community safety benefits and criticism over privacy and law enforcement data-sharing concerns. Ring's combination of its famous "Shark Tank" rejection turned billion-dollar Amazon acquisition and its popularization of the consumer video doorbell category has made it one of the most commercially significant modern home security companies.
