ADT
ADT traces its origins to 1874, when it was founded as American District Telegraph, initially providing telegraph-based alarm signaling services decades before modern electronic home security existed, making it one of the oldest continuously operating security companies in the country. The company built its reputation around professionally monitored alarm systems connected to dedicated monitoring centers staffed around the clock, a model requiring long-term contracts and professional installation that became the industry standard approach for decades before newer self-installed alternatives emerged. ADT's iconic yard signs and window decals, warning potential intruders that a property is protected by ADT monitoring, became one of the most widely recognized pieces of home security branding in the country, frequently used even by properties actually protected by other systems as a general deterrent signal. ADT's combination of its 19th-century telegraph-signaling origins and its historically dominant position in professionally monitored home security has made it one of the most enduringly recognized security brands in American history.
VS
Vivint
Vivint was founded in 1999 in Utah, originally under the name APX Alarm Security Solutions, and it built its early growth substantially around door-to-door sales representatives, a labor-intensive customer acquisition model common among home security companies of that era. The company later rebranded as Vivint and repositioned itself around comprehensive smart home technology integration, combining traditional security monitoring with connected smart locks, thermostats, lighting, and cameras into a single unified home automation platform. Vivint's approach of bundling extensive smart home automation features alongside core security monitoring, rather than treating security as a standalone product, reflected the broader industry convergence between home security and the growing consumer smart home technology market during the 2010s. Vivint's combination of its door-to-door sales growth model and its later pivot toward comprehensive smart home integration has made it one of the more significant companies bridging traditional home security and modern smart home technology.
