Akira Kurosawa
Akira Kurosawa's 1950 film Rashomon, which tells the same crime from four contradictory perspectives, introduced a nonlinear storytelling structure so influential that "the Rashomon effect" became a widely used term across psychology, law, and journalism to describe unreliable, conflicting eyewitness accounts of the same event. His samurai films, including Seven Samurai and Yojimbo, directly influenced the development of the American Western genre — Seven Samurai was remade in the US as The Magnificent Seven, and Yojimbo's plot was adapted, uncredited, into Sergio Leone's A Fistful of Dollars, sparking a lawsuit that Kurosawa's production company ultimately won. Kurosawa's frequent collaboration with actor Toshiro Mifune across 16 films produced one of the most significant director-actor partnerships in world cinema, and his technical innovations — including some of the earliest sustained use of multiple cameras filming a single scene simultaneously — expanded what was considered technically possible in film production. His influence on American filmmakers, particularly George Lucas, who has directly credited Kurosawa's The Hidden Fortress as an inspiration for Star Wars, reflects how thoroughly Kurosawa's work reshaped not just Japanese cinema but the broader trajectory of global filmmaking across multiple generations of directors.
VS
Alfred Hitchcock
Alfred Hitchcock directed more than 50 feature films across a career spanning six decades, and his mastery of suspense — deliberately giving audiences information the characters on screen didn't have, rather than relying purely on surprise — became such a defining technique that "Hitchcockian" is still used as shorthand for that specific style of tension-building. His 1960 film Psycho, made on a deliberately modest budget and marketed with strict rules against admitting latecomers to screenings, became one of the most influential horror films ever made, and its shower scene remains one of the most analyzed and referenced sequences in cinema history. Hitchcock was famously never awarded a competitive Academy Award for Best Director despite five nominations, receiving only an honorary lifetime achievement award in 1968 — a gap widely regarded by film historians as one of the Oscars' more glaring omissions given his sustained influence on the medium. His frequent on-screen cameos in his own films, his television anthology series Alfred Hitchcock Presents, and his instantly recognizable silhouette made him one of the first film directors to become a genuine public celebrity in his own right, rather than a figure known only within the industry.
