Alberto Tomba
Alberto Tomba, nicknamed "La Bomba," won gold medals in both the slalom and giant slalom at the 1988 Calgary Olympics as a 21-year-old, announcing himself as the sport's next dominant technical skier and instantly becoming one of Italy's biggest sports stars. He added a third Olympic gold in giant slalom at the 1992 Albertville Games and a silver in slalom, then closed his Olympic career with another slalom silver at the 1994 Lillehammer Games, giving him five total Olympic medals across three consecutive Winter Games — a level of Olympic-cycle consistency few technical skiers have matched. Tomba's flamboyant, outsized personality off the slopes — confident to the point of brash, and a fixture of Italian tabloid coverage for his personal life as much as his skiing — made him one of the sport's most recognizable global stars during an era when alpine skiing drew some of its largest television audiences. He won 50 World Cup races across his career, concentrated almost entirely in slalom and giant slalom, and his combination of technical dominance, Olympic longevity, and larger-than-life public persona made him Italian winter sports' biggest star for the better part of a decade.
VS
Ingemar Stenmark
Ingemar Stenmark won 86 World Cup races across his career, a record that stood as untouchable for more than three decades until Mikaela Shiffrin finally surpassed it in 2023 — a 34-year gap between the record being set and broken that reflects just how far ahead of his competition Stenmark was during his 1970s and early 1980s prime. His dominance was concentrated almost entirely in the technical disciplines, slalom and giant slalom, where he won 46 and 40 World Cup races respectively, largely bypassing the faster, more dangerous speed events like downhill — a specialization that let him refine his technical skiing to a level rivals spent years trying to replicate. Stenmark won three consecutive overall World Cup titles from 1976 to 1978 and added two Olympic gold medals at the 1980 Lake Placid Games, in slalom and giant slalom, capping a run that made him Sweden's most successful winter Olympian and one of the most recognizable skiers in the sport's history. His technical precision on tightly set slalom courses, combined with the sheer volume of his win total, is why ski historians still treat Stenmark's 86 wins as the benchmark achievement in the sport — a record that took skiing's next great generational talent more than 30 years to finally catch.
