Alberto Tomba
Alberto Tomba, nicknamed "La Bomba," won gold medals in both the slalom and giant slalom at the 1988 Calgary Olympics as a 21-year-old, announcing himself as the sport's next dominant technical skier and instantly becoming one of Italy's biggest sports stars. He added a third Olympic gold in giant slalom at the 1992 Albertville Games and a silver in slalom, then closed his Olympic career with another slalom silver at the 1994 Lillehammer Games, giving him five total Olympic medals across three consecutive Winter Games — a level of Olympic-cycle consistency few technical skiers have matched. Tomba's flamboyant, outsized personality off the slopes — confident to the point of brash, and a fixture of Italian tabloid coverage for his personal life as much as his skiing — made him one of the sport's most recognizable global stars during an era when alpine skiing drew some of its largest television audiences. He won 50 World Cup races across his career, concentrated almost entirely in slalom and giant slalom, and his combination of technical dominance, Olympic longevity, and larger-than-life public persona made him Italian winter sports' biggest star for the better part of a decade.
VS
Lindsey Vonn
Lindsey Vonn won 82 World Cup races across her career, the most by any American skier in history and second only to Ingemar Stenmark and Mikaela Shiffrin on the sport's all-time list, built primarily around dominance in the speed disciplines of downhill and super-G. She won Olympic gold in the downhill at the 2010 Vancouver Games, becoming the first American woman to win Olympic gold in that event, and added four overall World Cup titles across her career, a level of season-long consistency across every discipline that complemented her event-specific speed dominance. Vonn's career was repeatedly interrupted by serious injuries, including multiple ACL tears and a fractured arm, and she competed through years of chronic knee pain that eventually forced her retirement in 2019 — a career shortened by injury even as she remained one of the sport's most dominant downhill skiers whenever healthy enough to race. Her combination of speed-event dominance, global crossover fame, and a relentless recovery from injury after injury made her the face of American alpine skiing for over a decade, and her 82 World Cup wins remain the standard against which subsequent American skiers, male or female, are measured.
