Alex Megos
Alex Megos became one of the most significant lead and sport climbers of his generation, becoming the first person to onsight a route graded 9a — climbing it cleanly on the very first attempt with no prior knowledge of its moves — a benchmark achievement that reshaped expectations for what onsight climbing at the highest grades could look like. His combination of competition success and significant outdoor rock climbing achievements distinguished him from climbers who specialized purely in one format or the other, giving him credibility across both the indoor competition circuit and the broader outdoor sport climbing community. Megos's technical precision and his willingness to attempt historically difficult outdoor routes previously climbed only by a small handful of specialists established him as one of the sport's most versatile and technically accomplished all-around climbers. His combination of his historic onsight breakthrough and his sustained excellence across both competition and outdoor sport climbing has made Megos one of the most respected and technically significant climbers in the sport's modern history.
VS
Akiyo Noguchi
Akiyo Noguchi won more Bouldering World Cup overall titles than any other woman in the discipline's history, sustaining a level of dominance across more than a decade that established her as the benchmark women's competition climber before the sport's Olympic debut. Her sustained excellence across changing competition formats and an increasingly deep international field throughout the 2010s reflected a level of technical consistency that few competitors, in any era of the sport, have matched over such an extended competitive span. Noguchi's bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, held in 2021, in the sport's combined format debut event, gave her career an Olympic-stage achievement to complement her already-dominant World Cup record, closing out her competitive career at the sport's biggest possible stage. Her combination of her record-setting Bouldering World Cup title total and her Olympic-stage achievement has made Noguchi one of the most statistically dominant and historically significant competition climbers in the sport's history.
