Alfa Romeo Spider
The original Alfa Romeo Spider, known internally as the Duetto, launched in 1966 with body styling from the Italian design house Pininfarina, and its long, low, boat-tail rear end became one of the most recognizable Italian roadster silhouettes of the entire 1960s. The car achieved lasting American pop-culture fame after appearing prominently in the 1967 film "The Graduate," in which Dustin Hoffman's character drives a red Duetto Spider — a role that introduced the car to a huge American audience and cemented its image as a symbol of youthful, restless energy. Alfa Romeo kept the Spider in production for an unusually long run, from 1966 through 1993, updating its styling in stages across that span while keeping the same fundamental rear-wheel-drive, front-engine roadster layout the entire time, a rare case of a single nameplate staying in continuous production across nearly three decades of changing automotive design trends. Built at Alfa Romeo's historic facilities in Italy, the Spider's combination of genuine Pininfarina design pedigree and a permanent place in American film history has made it one of the most culturally significant Italian roadsters ever exported to the United States.
VS
Fiat 124 Spider
The original Fiat 124 Sport Spider launched in 1966 with styling by Pininfarina, built on a shortened version of the Fiat 124 sedan's platform, and it went on to become one of the best-selling Italian sports cars ever exported to the United States, with production continuing all the way through 1985 under Fiat and later Pininfarina's own direct ownership of the model. Fiat revived the 124 Spider name in 2016 through a genuinely unusual partnership with Mazda, building the new car on the same platform as the fourth-generation Mazda MX-5 Miata and assembling it on the same production line in Hiroshima, Japan, alongside its Mazda sibling. Despite sharing its chassis, top mechanism, and much of its structure with the Miata, the revived 124 Spider was tuned with its own turbocharged engine and distinct styling specifically designed to evoke the original 1966 car's long hood and rounded Italian lines, giving Fiat a genuinely differentiated product rather than a simple badge-engineered clone. Built at Mazda's Hiroshima plant under that shared-platform arrangement, the modern 124 Spider's combination of classic Pininfarina-inspired Italian styling and proven, Miata-derived Japanese engineering made it a genuinely distinctive entry in the modern affordable roadster market during its 2016-2020 production run.
