Alien
Alien, directed by Ridley Scott and released in 1979, fused science fiction with horror filmmaking conventions, presenting its titular creature — designed by Swiss artist H.R. Giger with a deliberately biomechanical, sexually unsettling aesthetic — as an almost unstoppable predator stalking a spaceship crew in claustrophobic, industrial corridors. The film's famous "chestburster" scene, in which the alien creature violently emerges from a crew member's chest during a dinner scene, was reportedly kept secret even from most of the film's own cast, whose genuine shocked reactions on camera were captured using effects the actors hadn't been fully prepared for in advance. Sigourney Weaver's performance as protagonist Ellen Ripley established one of the first genuinely capable, non-sexualized female action leads in a major science fiction film, a character template that significantly influenced how subsequent science fiction and action films wrote their own female protagonists. Alien's combination of a slow-building, dread-heavy pace with sudden, visceral horror sequences established a hybrid science fiction-horror template that directly influenced decades of subsequent films in both genres, and the franchise it launched has continued across multiple sequels, prequels, and crossover films in the decades since.
VS
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Close Encounters of the Third Kind, released in 1977 and directed by Steven Spielberg, presented humanity's first contact with extraterrestrial life as a wondrous, benevolent event rather than the hostile alien invasion typical of most science fiction films up to that point, a deliberately optimistic tonal choice that distinguished it sharply from the genre's earlier Cold War-era conventions. The film's climactic communication sequence, in which humans and aliens exchange a simple five-note musical phrase as a universal greeting, became one of the most recognizable pieces of film scoring in John Williams's celebrated career, and the phrase itself entered broader popular culture as an easily recognizable musical shorthand for alien contact. Wyoming's Devils Tower, the real geological formation depicted as the site of the film's climactic alien contact, became a significantly more visited tourist destination following the film's release, and the National Park Service has cited the film as a major contributing factor to increased visitor interest in the monument. Spielberg's decision to cast French filmmaker François Truffaut in a major supporting role, alongside the director's careful, wonder-focused approach to depicting the extraterrestrial encounter itself, helped establish Close Encounters as one of the defining optimistic science fiction films of its era, in direct contrast to the genre's more paranoid and hostile-alien-focused entries.
