Alive
"Alive" (1993) dramatizes the true story of the 1972 Andes flight disaster, in which survivors of a plane crash in the remote Andes mountains resorted to eating the flesh of deceased passengers to survive over ten weeks stranded at extreme altitude before eventual rescue. The film's unflinching depiction of the survivors' desperate decision, treated with a degree of dramatic restraint and moral seriousness rather than sensationalism, reflected the genuine cooperation of several real survivors who served as consultants during the production. Its extended sequences depicting the psychological toll of prolonged isolation, extreme cold, and starvation at high altitude captured the specific physical and mental deterioration central to the real survivors' actual published accounts of the ordeal. Its combination of its respectful treatment of a genuinely harrowing true story and its collaboration with actual survivors has made "Alive" one of the most historically significant survival films based on real events.
VS
The Revenant
"The Revenant" (2015), directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, follows a 19th-century frontiersman's brutal survival and revenge journey after being mauled by a bear and left for dead by his companions, based loosely on the real experiences of frontiersman Hugh Glass. Leonardo DiCaprio's committed physical performance, filmed under notoriously difficult conditions using only natural light in remote, extreme-cold locations, finally earned him his first Academy Award for Best Actor after several prior nominations across his career. Cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki's extended, technically demanding long takes, including the film's harrowing bear attack sequence, combined with the production's insistence on shooting almost entirely with natural lighting, gave the film a level of visceral, immersive realism unusual for a survival epic of its scale. Its combination of DiCaprio's Oscar-winning committed performance and Lubezki's technically extraordinary natural-light cinematography has made "The Revenant" one of the most acclaimed and physically demanding survival films ever produced.
