American Hustle
"American Hustle" (2013), directed by David O. Russell, loosely dramatizes the real 1970s FBI Abscam sting operation, following a con artist and his partner coerced into helping federal agents entrap corrupt politicians, earning ten Academy Award nominations including Best Picture. Its ensemble cast, including Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper, and Jennifer Lawrence, each received individual Academy Award nominations for their performances, an unusually complete sweep of acting recognition across a film's principal cast. The film's deliberately messy, morally ambiguous structure, in which nearly every character is engaged in some form of deception against nearly every other character, reflected the genuinely convoluted real Abscam operation more than a cleaner, more traditionally heroic con artist narrative would have. Its combination of its across-the-board acting recognition and its genuinely tangled, multi-directional deception structure has made "American Hustle" one of the most critically acclaimed con artist films of the 2010s.

Nine Queens
"Nine Queens" (2000), an Argentine film directed by Fabián Bielinsky, follows two con artists in Buenos Aires who join forces for a single day around an elaborate scheme involving a set of forged rare stamps, building toward a widely praised twist ending recontextualizing the entire preceding plot. The film became a major critical and commercial success in Argentina and internationally, helping introduce a wider global audience to Argentine cinema during a period of renewed international critical attention to Latin American filmmaking in the early 2000s. Its tightly constructed, single-day narrative structure, unfolding almost in real time as the central scheme develops, distinguished it from con artist films spanning longer timeframes, giving "Nine Queens" a particularly tense, tightly wound pacing throughout. Its combination of its widely praised twist ending and its significant role introducing international audiences to contemporary Argentine cinema has made "Nine Queens" one of the most critically significant non-English-language con artist films ever made.
