Amr Shabana
Amr Shabana won the World Open championship four times between 2003 and 2009, establishing himself as the leading figure of Egypt's emergence as the dominant national power in men's squash during the 2000s, a shift that moved the sport's center of competitive gravity away from Pakistan's earlier decades of dominance. His elegant, technically refined playing style, built around precise racquet control and shot placement rather than pure physical power, made Shabana one of the most aesthetically admired players of his generation, frequently cited by squash commentators for the visual quality of his game. Shabana's success helped establish Egypt's now-extensive squash development infrastructure, which has since produced a continuous pipeline of subsequent world-class Egyptian players, making his individual championship success foundational to the broader Egyptian squash program's sustained international dominance in the years since. His combined four World Open titles and his role in launching Egypt's continued dominance of men's squash, a dominance the country has sustained through multiple subsequent champions, make Shabana one of the most significant transitional figures in the sport's modern competitive history.
VS
Heather McKay
Heather McKay won every major squash tournament she entered for 19 consecutive years, from 1962 until her retirement from the sport in 1981, reportedly losing only two matches across that entire span, a level of sustained, essentially uninterrupted dominance unmatched by any player, male or female, in the sport's history. Her 16 consecutive British Open titles, won between 1962 and 1977 before the tournament's format changed, remain the most in the tournament's history by a wide margin, and McKay's dominance during that period was considered so complete that she frequently won matches without dropping a single game. McKay later transitioned to competitive racquetball after moving to Canada, and she won multiple national and world racquetball titles in that separate sport as well, demonstrating a level of cross-racquet-sport athletic dominance that few athletes in any sport have achieved across two genuinely distinct competitive disciplines. Her nearly two-decade unbeaten run across squash's biggest tournaments is widely regarded by the sport's historians as the single most dominant individual competitive record in squash history, and McKay remains the benchmark against which subsequent great women's squash players are measured.
