An Inconvenient Truth
An Inconvenient Truth, released in 2006, presents former Vice President Al Gore's extensive slideshow presentation on climate change, and the film's unconventional format, largely built around Gore lecturing to a live audience, became one of the most commercially successful documentaries in film history despite its unusually didactic presentation style. The film won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, and Gore's broader climate advocacy work following the film's success contributed to him sharing the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Its combination of scientific data presentation with Gore's personal narrative about his own environmental awakening gave the film a hybrid structure blending policy advocacy with individual storytelling, a format that significantly influenced subsequent climate-focused documentary filmmaking. An Inconvenient Truth's massive commercial and cultural impact helped bring climate change into mainstream American political and public discourse at a scale it hadn't previously achieved, and the film remains one of the most influential advocacy documentaries ever produced.
VS
Blackfish
Blackfish, released in 2013, examines the captivity of orcas at SeaWorld through the specific story of Tilikum, a killer whale involved in the deaths of several trainers, and the film's investigation into captive orca psychology and behavior generated significant public and commercial backlash against SeaWorld. Its detailed examination of the specific 2010 death of trainer Dawn Brancheau, killed by Tilikum during a live performance, combined with interviews from former SeaWorld trainers describing the psychological toll of captivity on the animals, gave the film a pointed critical argument against marine mammal captivity for entertainment purposes. The documentary's release directly preceded a significant decline in SeaWorld's attendance and stock price, and the company's subsequent 2016 announcement that it would end its orca breeding program was widely attributed at least partly to the sustained public pressure the film generated. Blackfish's combination of genuinely investigative documentary journalism and its measurable real-world commercial and policy impact on SeaWorld's business practices has made it one of the most consequential advocacy documentaries of the 2010s.
