Anchor Bar
The Anchor Bar in Buffalo, New York is widely credited as the birthplace of the Buffalo wing, with the most commonly told origin story crediting co-owner Teressa Bellissimo with first deep-frying and tossing chicken wings in a cayenne-butter sauce in 1964 as a late-night snack for her son and his friends. The bar's original wing preparation — deep-fried unbreaded wings tossed in a simple butter-and-hot-sauce mixture, served with celery sticks and blue cheese dressing — established the template that nearly every subsequent Buffalo wing served anywhere in the world has followed in some form. Buffalo's city government has formally recognized the Anchor Bar's role in wing history, and the bar has leaned into its origin-story status by preserving much of its original decor and continuing to serve its wings using close to the same original recipe and format for over half a century. The Anchor Bar's direct claim to inventing the Buffalo wing and its role in establishing the format followed by the entire modern chicken-wing industry has made it one of the most historically significant single food origin points in American cuisine.
VS
Quaker Steak & Lube
Quaker Steak & Lube began in a converted 1930s gas station in Sharon, Pennsylvania in 1974, and its automotive-garage theming — complete with hanging car parts, gas-pump decor, and vintage automobile displays throughout its dining rooms — became a distinctive visual identity tightly wound around its wing-focused menu. The chain built a specific reputation around its wing sauce lineup and hosted organized wing-eating competitions at various points in its history, positioning its wings as a central, competition-worthy attraction rather than simply one menu item among many. The restaurant's garage-and-motorsports theme, including branding tie-ins with racing culture, gave it a genuinely distinct identity compared to the sports-bar-format wing chains that dominate the category, appealing specifically to a car-culture-adjacent customer base. Quaker Steak & Lube's combination of its distinctive automotive-garage theming and its wing-centered competitive menu identity has made it one of the more regionally beloved and visually distinctive wing chains in the country.
