Antoni Gaudí
Antoni Gaudí worked primarily in Barcelona, Spain in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, developing an extraordinarily distinctive architectural style drawing on natural organic forms, vivid color, and intricate craftsmanship that became closely associated with the broader Catalan Modernisme movement. Gaudí's masterwork, the Sagrada Família basilica in Barcelona, began construction in 1882 and remains unfinished more than a century later, continuing to be built according to Gaudí's original design intentions and funded largely by tourist admission fees rather than traditional religious donations. Gaudí's other major Barcelona works, including Park Güell and Casa Batlló, feature his signature use of dramatically curved architectural forms, colorful ceramic tile mosaics known as trencadís, and structural techniques directly inspired by natural forms like tree branches and animal skeletons. Antoni Gaudí's combination of his still-unfinished Sagrada Família masterwork and his singularly organic, nature-inspired architectural style has made him one of the most distinctive and influential architects in history.

I.M. Pei
I.M. Pei was born in Guangzhou, China in 1917 and emigrated to the United States in 1935 to study architecture, eventually becoming one of the most celebrated modernist architects of the 20th century, known for combining geometric precision with monumental scale. Pei's most globally famous work, the glass pyramid entrance to the Louvre Museum in Paris, completed in 1989, was initially highly controversial among French critics and the public for its stark modern design juxtaposed against the historic palace, before eventually becoming one of the most iconic architectural landmarks in the world. Pei received the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1983, and his broader portfolio includes the National Gallery of Art's East Building in Washington, D.C. and the Bank of China Tower in Hong Kong, reflecting a career spanning major institutional and civic architecture across multiple continents. I.M. Pei's combination of his initially controversial but ultimately beloved Louvre Pyramid design and his decades-long career spanning major institutional architecture worldwide has made him one of the most influential architects of the 20th century.
