Arcade Fire
Arcade Fire's 2004 debut album Funeral, written partly in response to several band members' family deaths during its creation, combined orchestral, multi-instrumentalist arrangements with genuinely large emotional ambition, distinguishing the band from indie rock's more stripped-down, minimalist tendencies of the era. The Montreal-based band's large lineup, frequently featuring seven or more members playing a wide range of instruments including strings, horns, and accordion simultaneously, gave their live performances an unusually large-scale, communal energy that helped establish their reputation as one of indie rock's most compelling live acts. Their 2010 album The Suburbs won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year, a surprising recognition for a genuinely independent-label rock album competing against far more commercially mainstream nominees, and the win became one of the most widely discussed Grammy upsets in the ceremony's modern history. Arcade Fire's combination of large-scale orchestral ambition and genuine emotional and thematic seriousness, addressing suburban alienation, mortality, and technology's effect on modern life, helped establish that indie rock bands could achieve major mainstream commercial and awards recognition without abandoning genuinely ambitious, non-commercial artistic goals.
VS
Vampire Weekend
Vampire Weekend formed while its members were students at Columbia University, and their 2008 self-titled debut album's blend of indie rock with West African-influenced guitar patterns and orchestral pop arrangements gave the band a distinctive sound that drew both significant acclaim and some criticism over questions of cultural appropriation. The band's preppy visual aesthetic and lyrical references to Ivy League campus life and upper-class cultural touchstones distinguished them from indie rock's more typically bohemian or working-class self-presentation, making Vampire Weekend a frequently discussed example of indie rock's evolving relationship with class and cultural identity. Their 2013 album Modern Vampires of the City marked a deliberate sonic and thematic maturation, exploring mortality and religious doubt with considerably more emotional weight than the band's earlier, more overtly playful material, and the album topped the Billboard 200 chart upon release. Frontman Ezra Koenig's continued creative evolution, including the band's extended hiatus before 2019's Grammy-winning Father of the Bride, reflected Vampire Weekend's consistent willingness to meaningfully evolve their sound across each subsequent album rather than repeating their earlier commercial formula.
