Augustana University
Augustana University, founded in 1860 and affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, is consistently ranked among the top regional liberal arts universities in the Midwest, and its Sioux Falls, South Dakota location gives students access to the state's largest city and its concentration of financial and healthcare industry employers. The university's business and pre-health programs have built solid reputations, and Augustana's continued Lutheran affiliation shapes aspects of its institutional mission even as the broader student body includes students from diverse religious backgrounds. Augustana's relatively selective admissions profile and its combination of liberal arts breadth with genuine professional program strength have made it the leading private university in South Dakota, distinguished from the state's larger public institutions by its smaller, more personalized scale. The university's combination of its Lutheran heritage, its Sioux Falls location, and its solid business and health sciences programs has made Augustana a distinctive private university choice within South Dakota's higher education landscape.
VS
Black Hills State University
Black Hills State University, founded in 1883, has built solid education and business programs, and its location in Spearfish, South Dakota, in the heart of the scenic Black Hills region, gives the university's outdoor recreation and geology programs direct access to significant natural terrain. The university's proximity to Mount Rushmore, the Homestake Gold Mine, and other significant regional landmarks gives BHSU's tourism and hospitality management programs practical, locally relevant career preparation tied to the region's substantial tourism economy. Black Hills State's relatively small size and its scenic western South Dakota setting have made it a consistent choice for students in that part of the state seeking a public university education closer to home than the state's larger eastern institutions. The university's combination of its Black Hills regional setting and its tourism-industry-connected academic programs has made BHSU a distinctive regional public university within South Dakota's higher education system.
