Augustana University
Augustana University, founded in 1860 and affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, is consistently ranked among the top regional liberal arts universities in the Midwest, and its Sioux Falls, South Dakota location gives students access to the state's largest city and its concentration of financial and healthcare industry employers. The university's business and pre-health programs have built solid reputations, and Augustana's continued Lutheran affiliation shapes aspects of its institutional mission even as the broader student body includes students from diverse religious backgrounds. Augustana's relatively selective admissions profile and its combination of liberal arts breadth with genuine professional program strength have made it the leading private university in South Dakota, distinguished from the state's larger public institutions by its smaller, more personalized scale. The university's combination of its Lutheran heritage, its Sioux Falls location, and its solid business and health sciences programs has made Augustana a distinctive private university choice within South Dakota's higher education landscape.
VS
Dakota Wesleyan University
Dakota Wesleyan University, founded in 1885 and affiliated with the United Methodist Church, is a small liberal arts university whose business and education programs have built solid regional reputations relative to the school's modest overall enrollment. The university's McGovern Library of History and Political Science honors South Dakota native and former US Senator and presidential candidate George McGovern, who briefly taught at the university, giving Dakota Wesleyan a distinctive connection to a significant figure in American political history. The university's small size and its Mitchell, South Dakota campus give it a close-knit religious community distinct from the state's larger public institutions, and Dakota Wesleyan's continued Methodist affiliation shapes aspects of campus culture. The university's combination of its Methodist heritage and its distinctive connection to George McGovern's political legacy has made Dakota Wesleyan a notable smaller private college choice within South Dakota.
