Balboa Park
Balboa Park was set aside as public parkland in 1868, remarkably early in San Diego's development, but its now-iconic Spanish Colonial Revival architecture dates specifically to the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, a world's fair San Diego hosted to celebrate the opening of the Panama Canal and its own arrival as a Pacific port city. Rather than demolishing the exposition's temporary buildings afterward, as most world's fairs of the era did, San Diego kept and gradually rebuilt them in permanent materials, giving the park one of the largest and most cohesive collections of Spanish Colonial Revival architecture anywhere in the country. The park now houses 17 museums, several performing arts venues, and the San Diego Zoo within its roughly 1,200 acres, making it one of the largest urban cultural parks in the United States, and its 1935 Pan-American Exposition added the additional Spanish and Mission Revival buildings that fill out the park's southern half today. For a San Diego attractions list, Balboa Park is the essential "the world's fair that stuck around" entry — 1915 exposition architecture the city chose to keep permanently, now wrapping 17 museums and the zoo inside one of the largest urban cultural parks in the country.
VS
USS Midway Museum
The USS Midway served in the US Navy from 1945 to 1992, one of the longest operational careers of any American aircraft carrier in the 20th century, having been commissioned just after World War II ended and remaining in active service through the Gulf War nearly five decades later. The ship was converted into a museum and opened to the public in 2004, permanently docked in San Diego Bay, and it now offers visitors access to the flight deck, hangar bay, and numerous restored aircraft, along with narrated tours led in part by actual Navy veterans who served aboard the ship or similar carriers. At more than 1,000 feet long, the Midway remains one of the largest museum ships in the world, and its flight deck offers sweeping views across San Diego Bay and the city's downtown skyline, giving visitors both a military history experience and one of the better vantage points in the entire city. For a San Diego attractions list, the USS Midway Museum is the essential "the carrier that outlasted the Cold War" entry — a 1945-to-1992 aircraft carrier now permanently docked as a museum, offering both restored World War II-era aircraft and some of the best skyline views in San Diego.
