Ballantyne, NC
Ballantyne developed beginning in the 1990s as a large master-planned mixed-use community in south Charlotte, built around the Ballantyne Corporate Park, which has grown into one of the largest suburban office parks in the entire Southeast and draws major corporate tenants specifically seeking a campus-style alternative to a downtown Charlotte office tower. The area's residential development was built substantially around golf-course frontage, anchored by the Ballantyne Country Club, giving much of the neighborhood a resort-adjacent feel distinct from more conventional suburban subdivisions elsewhere in the Charlotte metro area. Ballantyne Village and the newer Backyard entertainment district have given the area a walkable retail and dining core to complement its corporate office park, a deliberate mixed-use strategy aimed at reducing residents' and workers' need to drive elsewhere in Charlotte for shopping, dining, or entertainment. Ballantyne's combination of a major suburban corporate office park, golf-course-oriented residential development, and a growing walkable retail and entertainment core has made it one of the more economically significant and rapidly developed areas anywhere in south Charlotte.
VS
Huntersville, NC
Huntersville has been among the fastest-growing towns in North Carolina over the past two decades, expanding substantially as part of the broader Charlotte metro area's growth along the Lake Norman corridor north of the city, transforming from a small rural crossroads community into one of the larger suburban towns in Mecklenburg County. Birkdale Village, a mixed-use lifestyle center that opened in 2002 combining retail, restaurants, and residential units in a walkable town-center format, became one of the earlier and more successful examples of that development model in the Charlotte region and has anchored the town's commercial identity since. The town's proximity to Lake Norman, the largest man-made lake in North Carolina, has given Huntersville residents convenient access to boating and lakefront recreation without the highest price premiums found in some of the more exclusive lakefront communities directly on the water's edge. Huntersville's combination of rapid, sustained suburban growth, an early and successful walkable mixed-use town center in Birkdale Village, and convenient Lake Norman access has made it one of the more consistently recommended suburbs anywhere north of downtown Charlotte.
