Bates College
Bates College, founded in 1855 by abolitionists, was one of the first colleges in the country to admit students without regard to race, gender, or religious affiliation from its very founding, reflecting the college's origins directly tied to the abolitionist movement in pre-Civil War New England. The college's distinctive short winter term, running for roughly a month between its fall and spring semesters, lets students pursue a single focused, often unconventional course or independent project, similar in spirit to the January-term calendars several other elite liberal arts colleges maintain. Bates does not require standardized test scores for admission, one of the earliest liberal arts colleges to adopt a test-optional policy, reflecting the college's continued institutional emphasis on holistic evaluation over standardized measures alone. The college's combination of its genuine founding-era commitment to inclusive admission, its distinctive short winter term, and its early adoption of test-optional admissions has made Bates one of the most institutionally progressive of the elite New England liberal arts colleges.
VS
University of Maine
The University of Maine, founded in 1865, is the state's flagship public research university, and its engineering and forestry programs reflect Maine's significant natural resources economy, with the university's Advanced Structures and Composites Center leading significant research into offshore floating wind turbine technology. UMaine's marine sciences program benefits directly from Maine's extensive coastline, and the university's continued research into forest products and sustainable forestry practices reflects the state's historical and ongoing significance in the American paper and timber industries. The university's Orono campus and its role as Maine's only major public research university give it a significant statewide role in producing the state's engineers, teachers, and other professionals, a responsibility magnified by Maine's relatively small population and limited number of large public universities. UMaine's combination of genuine engineering research strength, particularly its offshore wind energy research, and its foundational role in Maine's forestry and marine economies has made it central to both the state's higher education system and its broader natural resources economy.
