Battleship Potemkin
Battleship Potemkin, released in 1925 and directed by Sergei Eisenstein, dramatized a real 1905 mutiny aboard a Russian naval battleship, and the film's revolutionary editing techniques, developed by Eisenstein as part of his broader theoretical work on film montage, fundamentally reshaped how filmmakers understood the relationship between individual shots and their combined emotional and political impact. The film's "Odessa Steps" sequence, depicting Tsarist soldiers massacring civilians on a long stone staircase, is widely regarded as one of the most influential sequences in film history, and its rapid, rhythmic editing technique has been directly referenced or homaged in numerous subsequent films across nearly a century of cinema. Eisenstein's theoretical writings on montage, developed partly through his work on Battleship Potemkin, argued that meaning in film emerges primarily through the collision and juxtaposition of individual shots rather than from any single image alone, a theory that became foundational to film studies and editing technique broadly. The film's overtly pro-revolutionary political content, made as Soviet propaganda commemorating the earlier 1905 uprising against Tsarist rule, has been examined both for its genuine technical filmmaking innovations and its role as a historically significant example of film's use as a political and ideological tool.
VS
The General
The General, released in 1926 and directed by and starring Buster Keaton, is widely regarded as one of the greatest achievements of the silent film era, combining an ambitious Civil War-set train-chase narrative with elaborate, genuinely dangerous physical stunts that Keaton performed himself without stunt doubles. The film's climactic sequence, in which a full-size real locomotive collapses through a burning bridge into a river below, was the single most expensive shot in silent film history at the time, filmed with a real train destroyed for a single take rather than relying on models or trick photography. Keaton's deadpan comedic performance style, maintaining an almost entirely expressionless face throughout even the film's most dangerous physical stunts, became one of the defining visual comedic techniques of the silent era, distinguishing his approach from the more overtly emotive physical comedy of contemporaries like Charlie Chaplin. Despite its now-legendary critical reputation, The General was a significant box-office disappointment upon its original 1926 release, and its status as one of the greatest films of the silent era developed substantially through later critical reappraisal, similar to the delayed recognition several other now-classic films have experienced.
