Belhaven University
Belhaven University, founded in 1883, is a Christian liberal arts university with a particularly strong reputation in the visual and performing arts, and its dance and theater programs have built a reputation extending beyond Mississippi given the relative rarity of dedicated arts conservatories within explicitly Christian universities. The university's explicit Christian mission is woven throughout its curriculum and campus culture, and Belhaven requires all students to complete coursework in biblical studies regardless of major, reflecting the university's institutional commitment to integrating faith with a broader liberal arts and professional education. Belhaven's Jackson, Mississippi campus and its relatively small enrollment give the university a close-knit religious community, and the school's continued growth in its arts programs specifically has distinguished it from other Christian universities more narrowly focused on business or ministry preparation alone. The university's combination of a genuine Christian institutional mission and its comparatively unusual strength in dance and performing arts has made Belhaven a distinctive choice among Mississippi's private colleges, particularly for students seeking arts training within an explicitly faith-based educational environment.
VS
University of Mississippi
The University of Mississippi, commonly known as Ole Miss, founded in 1848, is the state's flagship public research university, and its 1962 desegregation, following a federal court order admitting Black student James Meredith, sparked a violent riot that required federal troops to restore order, marking one of the most significant confrontations of the civil rights era. The university's business and accounting programs, along with its pharmacy school, have built strong regional reputations, and Ole Miss's law school remains one of the most respected in the state, producing a significant proportion of Mississippi's practicing attorneys and judges. The university's continued reckoning with its Confederate-era symbolism and its complicated civil rights history has shaped ongoing institutional efforts to reexamine campus monuments and traditions, a process that's remained a significant and sometimes contentious part of the university's public identity in recent decades. Ole Miss's combination of major Southeastern Conference athletics, particularly a passionate football culture centered on "The Grove" tailgating tradition, and its historically significant role in the civil rights movement have made it one of the more institutionally complex and closely watched public universities in the American South.
