Belmont University
Belmont University, founded in 1890, has built its national reputation around its Curb College of Entertainment and Music Business, one of the most respected music industry business programs in the country, drawing directly on the university's location in Nashville, the center of the American country and Christian music industries. The university's proximity to Nashville's Music Row gives students in the entertainment and music business program direct access to internships and networking within record labels, publishing houses, and artist management companies clustered within walking distance of campus. Belmont's continued Christian institutional affiliation, formerly with the Tennessee Baptist Convention before the university became independently governed in 2007, shapes aspects of its campus culture even as the school has grown into a larger, more academically comprehensive university over recent decades. The university's specific niche in entertainment and music industry education, combined with its direct physical proximity to the businesses that industry comprises, has made Belmont one of the most distinctive destination universities in the country for students specifically pursuing music business or entertainment industry careers.
VS
University of Tennessee, Knoxville
The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, founded in 1794, is the flagship of the state's public university system, and its Oak Ridge National Laboratory partnership, connecting the university to one of the Department of Energy's most significant national research laboratories, gives UT students and faculty direct access to major federal nuclear and energy research infrastructure. The university's engineering and business programs have built solid national reputations, and UT's agricultural and veterinary programs reflect its land-grant institutional founding mission, serving Tennessee's substantial rural and agricultural economy. UT's Lady Volunteers women's basketball program, built into a dynasty under legendary coach Pat Summitt with multiple national championships, made the university one of the most significant programs in the sport's history and helped drive broader mainstream interest in women's college basketball nationally. The university's Knoxville campus and its combination of major federal research partnerships, strong athletics, and comprehensive public university offerings have made UT the clear flagship of Tennessee's public higher education system, drawing students from across the state and increasingly from outside it as well.
