Sir Ben Ainslie
Ben Ainslie won Olympic gold medals in sailing across four consecutive Olympics between 2000 and 2012, along with a silver in 1996, making him the most decorated Olympic sailor in history with five total Olympic medals across five consecutive Games. His combination of tactical racing intelligence and sustained physical conditioning across sailing's different boat classes let him remain competitive at the sport's highest level for more than 15 years, and Ainslie's rivalry with Brazilian sailor Robert Scheidt across multiple Olympics became one of the sport's most closely followed individual competitive storylines. Ainslie's later transition into America's Cup competition, eventually leading Britain's INEOS Team UK challenge, reflected his ambition to bring the same competitive success to sailing's biggest team-based trophy that he'd already achieved at the individual Olympic level. His combined five Olympic medals across five consecutive Games, along with his subsequent America's Cup leadership role, have made Ainslie the individual most frequently cited as the greatest Olympic sailor in history, and his knighthood in 2013 reflected the significance British sport placed on his sustained Olympic achievement.
VS
Russell Coutts
Russell Coutts won the America's Cup five times across his sailing career, both as a skipper for New Zealand and later for Switzerland's Alinghi team, making him one of the most successful America's Cup competitors in the trophy's long history. His unbeaten record in America's Cup match racing at one point extended to a remarkable string of consecutive race wins, and Coutts's tactical precision as a skipper made him one of the most sought-after sailing leaders in the sport during his competitive prime. Coutts's controversial 2000 decision to leave New Zealand's successful America's Cup team to join Switzerland's rival Alinghi syndicate, helping that team win the Cup and take it away from his home country for the first time, made him a significant and complicated figure within New Zealand's sailing community. His combined five America's Cup victories across multiple different national teams have made Coutts one of the most statistically successful figures in the trophy's modern history, and his later work as CEO of the broader America's Cup organization extended his influence on the sport well beyond his own competitive sailing career.
