Benedictine College
Benedictine College, formed in 1971 through the merger of two earlier Catholic colleges founded by Benedictine monks and nuns, maintains an active on-campus abbey and monastery, giving the small Atchison, Kansas college a level of direct daily monastic religious presence unusual even among Catholic colleges. The college's explicit commitment to Catholic identity and its core curriculum grounded in Catholic intellectual tradition have made it one of the most academically and religiously traditional Catholic colleges in the Midwest, drawing students specifically seeking that particular combination. Benedictine's enrollment has grown substantially over the past two decades, a notable trend at a time when many small religious liberal arts colleges nationally have faced declining enrollment, reflecting the college's success in attracting students specifically drawn to its traditional Catholic mission. The college's combination of an active on-campus Benedictine monastic community, its explicitly traditional Catholic intellectual curriculum, and its notable recent enrollment growth has made it one of the most distinctive small Catholic colleges in the Midwest.
VS
Wichita State University
Wichita State University, founded in 1895, has built strong engineering and aerospace programs, reflecting the university's location in Wichita, historically known as "the Air Capital of the World" for its concentration of major aircraft manufacturers including Boeing, Cessna, and Beechcraft. The university's National Institute for Aviation Research is one of the largest aviation research facilities associated with any American university, giving Wichita State students direct access to industry-connected aerospace engineering research uncommon at most other public universities. WSU's business school and its health professions programs have built solid regional reputations, and the university's continued close ties to Wichita's aviation manufacturing base give its engineering graduates a particularly direct pipeline into the local aerospace industry's workforce needs. The university's specific strength in aviation and aerospace engineering, tied directly to Wichita's historical and continued significance in American aircraft manufacturing, has made Wichita State a distinctive choice among Kansas's public universities for students specifically interested in aerospace careers.
