Benjamin Franklin
Benjamin Franklin, one of the American Founding Fathers, was also a prolific inventor and scientist whose famous 1752 kite experiment helped demonstrate the electrical nature of lightning, contributing significantly to the scientific understanding of electricity in the 18th century. Franklin invented the lightning rod as a practical application of his electrical research, a device that significantly reduced fire damage to buildings and ships by safely directing lightning strikes into the ground, and the invention spread rapidly across both Europe and colonial America. Franklin also invented bifocal eyeglasses, allowing wearers to see clearly at both near and far distances through a single lens, and the Franklin stove, a more fuel-efficient home heating device, and he deliberately declined to patent most of his inventions, believing they should freely benefit the public. Benjamin Franklin's combination of his foundational electrical research and his practical, deliberately unpatented inventions like the lightning rod and bifocals has made him one of the most historically significant inventors among America's Founding Fathers.
VS
Leonardo da Vinci
Leonardo da Vinci, the Italian Renaissance polymath best known as a painter, also filled numerous notebooks with detailed engineering and mechanical designs centuries ahead of the technology available to actually build them, including concepts for flying machines, armored vehicles, and hydraulic systems. Da Vinci's notebooks contain detailed studies of human anatomy conducted through his own dissections, along with designs that anticipated later inventions including a rudimentary helicopter concept, a parachute design, and various mechanical devices, reflecting an unusually integrated approach combining art, science, and engineering. Very few of da Vinci's mechanical designs were actually built during his lifetime, since many required manufacturing precision and materials that didn't yet exist in 15th and 16th-century Italy, but his notebooks have had a substantial influence on later scientific and engineering history once rediscovered. Leonardo da Vinci's combination of his uniquely integrated Renaissance approach spanning art, anatomy, and engineering and his remarkably prescient mechanical designs has made him one of the most historically significant inventive minds in human history.
