Bethesda, MD
Bethesda sits in Montgomery County just northwest of the District line, and it's home to the main campus of the National Institutes of Health, the federal government's primary biomedical and public health research agency — a sprawling complex of research hospitals and laboratories that's made Bethesda one of the most significant concentrations of medical research employment anywhere in the country. The Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, the US military's flagship hospital and the facility that's treated sitting presidents for decades, sits directly adjacent to the NIH campus, reinforcing Bethesda's identity as a genuine center of federal medical and research infrastructure rather than a purely residential commuter suburb. Bethesda Row, a mixed-use downtown development built through the 1990s and 2000s around the Red Line Metro station, transformed what had been a fairly ordinary suburban commercial strip into one of the more walkable, restaurant-dense downtown districts in the entire DC suburban ring, and the Capital Crescent Trail, a rail-trail built on a former B&O Railroad line, gives residents a car-free biking and walking route directly into Georgetown. Served directly by the Red Line, Bethesda's combination of major federal research and medical institutions, a genuinely walkable transit-oriented downtown, and direct trail access into DC proper has made it one of the most consistently desirable and expensive suburbs in the entire Washington metropolitan area.
VS
Chevy Chase, MD
Chevy Chase straddles the Maryland-DC line just north of the district, and it's widely cited by urban historians as one of the earliest deliberately planned streetcar suburbs in the country — developed beginning in the 1890s by Nevada senator and real estate developer Francis G. Newlands, who built the Chevy Chase streetcar line specifically to connect his new subdivision directly to downtown Washington. That late-19th-century planning legacy shows up today in the area's wide, tree-lined avenues and consistently high-quality architecture, much of it dating to the early 20th century and preserved through decades of active historic-district zoning across the several distinct municipalities that make up the broader Chevy Chase area. The Chevy Chase Club, a private country club founded in 1892 as part of Newlands's original development, remains an active and historically significant institution in the area, reflecting the neighborhood's origins as a deliberately upscale retreat for Washington's professional and political class from the very beginning of its development. Served by the Red Line at the Friendship Heights station along its southern edge, Chevy Chase's combination of foundational streetcar-suburb planning history, consistently preserved early-20th-century architecture, and its position straddling the DC-Maryland line has made it one of the oldest and most enduringly prestigious suburban communities in the entire Washington metropolitan area.
