Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park
Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park occupies the southern tip of Key Biscayne and centers on the Cape Florida Lighthouse, built in 1825 and the oldest standing structure in Miami-Dade County, giving the beach a genuine historical landmark most other Miami shorelines lack. The park's beach was named "America's Best Beach" by the Travel Channel in 2008 and has consistently ranked among Dr. Beach's annual top beach lists, recognition driven partly by its calm, protected waters and partly by the park's broader mix of hiking trails, picnic areas, and the historic lighthouse grounds surrounding it. Its position at the very southern end of the key, facing both the open Atlantic and the calmer waters near the Cape Florida Channel, gives visitors a choice between more active surf on one side and gentler, more swimmable conditions on the other, within the same park. For a Miami beaches list, Bill Baggs Cape Florida is the essential "history plus a genuinely great beach" entry — a nationally ranked shoreline anchored by Miami-Dade's oldest standing structure, offering both calm swimming water and a real sense of place.
VS
Crandon Park Beach
Crandon Park Beach sits on Key Biscayne, a barrier island connected to the mainland by the Rickenbacker Causeway, and stretches roughly two miles along Biscayne Bay's Atlantic side, backed by a dense buffer of palm trees and sea grape that keeps it noticeably calmer and less commercial than South Beach. The park itself dates to a 1940s land donation to Miami-Dade County and now includes a full county-run beach facility with picnic pavilions, a marina, tennis courts, and a restored 1949 carousel, giving it a broader recreational identity beyond just the shoreline itself. Its shallow, gently sloping sandbar and generally calm surf, protected somewhat by the shape of the bay, have made it one of the most consistently recommended family beaches in Miami-Dade County, a contrast to the more current-exposed, open-ocean beaches elsewhere along the coast. For a Miami beaches list, Crandon Park Beach is the essential "bring the kids" entry — a calm, tree-lined Key Biscayne shoreline with shallow water and genuine park infrastructure, built for a full day out rather than a quick stop on the sand.
