Bill Gates
Bill Gates co-founded Microsoft in 1975 alongside Paul Allen, and Gates's 1980 deal to license an operating system to IBM for its new personal computer line, later developed into MS-DOS, became the foundational business decision that built Microsoft into the dominant software company of the personal computing era. Gates served as Microsoft's CEO until 2000, overseeing the company's growth into the world's largest software company and the release of the Windows operating system, which became the dominant computing platform for personal computers worldwide for decades. After stepping back from Microsoft's day-to-day operations, Gates shifted his primary focus to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which he co-founded and which has grown into one of the largest private charitable foundations in the world, focused significantly on global health and poverty reduction initiatives. Bill Gates's combination of his foundational role building Microsoft's personal computing dominance and his subsequent large-scale global philanthropic work has made him one of the most historically significant technology CEOs in modern business history.
VS
Jeff Bezos
Jeff Bezos founded Amazon in 1994, initially launching it as an online bookstore operating out of his garage in Bellevue, Washington, before deliberately expanding the company well beyond books into what he envisioned from early on as "the everything store." Bezos led Amazon through years of sustained unprofitability in pursuit of aggressive growth and market share, a strategy that drew significant investor skepticism at the time but ultimately built Amazon into one of the largest companies in the world by market capitalization, spanning e-commerce, cloud computing through Amazon Web Services, and numerous other business lines. Bezos stepped down as Amazon's CEO in 2021, transitioning to executive chairman, and he has since devoted significant attention to his aerospace company, Blue Origin, and to space exploration ventures more broadly, alongside his 2013 personal acquisition of The Washington Post newspaper. Jeff Bezos's combination of his sustained "everything store" growth strategy at Amazon and his pioneering Amazon Web Services cloud computing division has made him one of the most commercially significant technology CEOs in modern business history.
