Bishop Museum
The Bishop Museum was founded in 1889 by Charles Reed Bishop in memory of his wife, Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, the last direct descendant of the Kamehameha royal line, and it holds the largest collection of Hawaiian and Pacific Island cultural artifacts and natural history specimens anywhere in the world. Princess Pauahi's own personal collection of royal Hawaiian artifacts, including feather cloaks and other objects passed down through the Kamehameha dynasty, forms the founding core of the museum's collection, giving it a direct material connection to the Hawaiian monarchy that few other institutions can claim. The museum's Hawaiian Hall, housed in a Victorian-era building of native koa wood, was extensively renovated in the 2000s to modernize its exhibits while preserving the historic three-story gallery structure, and the museum's planetarium and natural science wings have expanded its scope well beyond purely cultural history. For a Honolulu attractions list, the Bishop Museum is the essential "the Kamehameha dynasty's own collection" entry — an 1889 museum built around a princess's personal royal artifacts, still the largest single repository of Hawaiian and Pacific cultural history anywhere in the world.
VS
Polynesian Cultural Center
The Polynesian Cultural Center opened in 1963 on Oahu's North Shore, developed by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints partly to provide employment and cultural preservation opportunities for students at the adjacent Brigham Young University–Hawaii campus, many of whom work at the center while attending school. The park is organized into distinct themed villages representing Hawaii, Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, Tahiti, Aotearoa (New Zealand), and the Marquesas Islands, each staffed largely by students and performers native to or descended from those specific Pacific Island cultures, offering demonstrations of traditional crafts, dance, and food rather than a generalized "Pacific Islander" presentation. Its nightly luau and stage show, "Hā: Breath of Life," has run for decades as one of the most elaborate Polynesian cultural performances staged anywhere, and the center has become one of the most visited paid attractions in the entire state of Hawaii, drawing millions of visitors since its founding. For a Honolulu attractions list, the Polynesian Cultural Center is the essential "seven cultures, one campus" entry — a 1963 university-adjacent park where students from across the actual Pacific Islands perform and teach the specific traditions of their own home cultures.
