Black Swan
"Black Swan" (2010), directed by Darren Aronofsky, follows a ballet dancer's psychological unraveling under the pressure of a demanding lead role, blurring the line between the character's literal reality and her increasingly unreliable perception throughout the film's escalating final act. Natalie Portman's performance, which required extensive ballet training and won her the Academy Award for Best Actress, grounded the film's increasingly surreal and body-horror-adjacent imagery in a genuinely committed physical and psychological transformation. The film's use of mirrors, doubling imagery, and deliberately disorienting editing techniques throughout reinforced its central themes of identity fragmentation and perfectionism's psychologically destructive costs, giving the thriller genre's typical unreliable-narrator device an unusually visceral artistic execution. Its combination of Portman's transformative central performance and its visually inventive approach to psychological unraveling has made "Black Swan" one of the most critically acclaimed psychological thrillers of the 2010s.

Shutter Island
"Shutter Island" (2010), directed by Martin Scorsese, follows a U.S. Marshal investigating a disappearance at an isolated psychiatric hospital, building toward a twist ending that recontextualizes nearly every prior scene once the protagonist's own unreliable perspective is fully revealed. Its deliberately disorienting visual style, incorporating dream sequences and shifting color palettes that blur the line between the protagonist's memories, hallucinations, and the film's ostensible present-day reality, reflected Scorsese's genre homage to classic 1940s and 1950s psychological melodrama and noir filmmaking. Leonardo DiCaprio's performance, requiring him to convey a character whose entire perceived reality is gradually revealed as compromised, anchored the film's twist-dependent structure with a genuine emotional grounding that kept the mystery from feeling purely mechanical. Its combination of its meticulously constructed unreliable-narrator twist and Scorsese's genre-homage visual style has made "Shutter Island" one of the most rewatched and analyzed psychological thrillers of the 2010s.
