Blackfoot
Blackfoot, formed by musicians of Native American heritage including several members who'd played alongside future Lynyrd Skynyrd members in earlier bands, built their sound around a harder-edged, more explicitly hard rock-influenced take on Southern rock than some of their genre contemporaries. Their 1979 song "Highway Song" and 1980 hit "Train, Train" became some of the band's most enduringly popular tracks, reflecting Blackfoot's commercial peak during Southern rock's continued mainstream radio presence into the early 1980s. The band's close personal connections to Lynyrd Skynyrd, including shared early band history among several members before each group's separate formation, reflected the tightly interconnected nature of the Jacksonville, Florida music scene that produced several significant Southern rock acts. Their combination of a harder-rocking sound within the Southern rock tradition and their direct musical lineage connections to Lynyrd Skynyrd's broader scene has made Blackfoot a significant, if somewhat less commercially dominant, part of the genre's classic era.
VS
Charlie Daniels Band
The Charlie Daniels Band's 1979 song "The Devil Went Down to Georgia," built around an extended fiddle showdown between the song's protagonist and the devil, became one of the most distinctive and enduringly popular songs in the Southern rock canon, blending rock instrumentation with traditional country and bluegrass fiddle playing. Charlie Daniels's background as a session musician, including work on several Bob Dylan recordings before forming his own band, gave him a broader musical pedigree beyond Southern rock specifically before establishing his own significant solo and band career. His later career as an outspoken conservative political commentator and his continued advocacy for American military veterans extended his public profile well beyond music into broader conservative political and cultural commentary in his later decades. The band's combination of "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" specifically becoming one of the most distinctive genre-blending songs in Southern rock history and Daniels's broader career longevity has made the Charlie Daniels Band one of the most enduringly recognized acts associated with the genre.
