BLACKPINK
BLACKPINK became the first K-pop girl group to headline a major American music festival, playing Coachella in 2019, and the group holds the record for the most-viewed music video premiere in YouTube history at the time of several of their major single releases. The group's combination of hip-hop-influenced production, high-fashion visual branding, and members individually signed to major global fashion houses as brand ambassadors gave BLACKPINK a level of luxury fashion industry crossover uncommon even among other successful K-pop acts. Their 2020 collaboration with Lady Gaga on "Sour Candy" and subsequent collaborations with other major Western pop artists reflected BLACKPINK's deliberate strategy of building crossover credibility within the English-language pop market alongside their core Korean-language releases. The group's massive social media following, including holding records for the most subscribed music group channel on YouTube for extended periods, has made BLACKPINK one of the most commercially significant K-pop girl groups globally, and their combined chart and touring success has established them as the genre's leading female act internationally.
VS
Big Bang
Big Bang, debuting in 2006 under YG Entertainment, is widely credited with establishing hip-hop and R&B-influenced production as a dominant sound within mainstream K-pop, distinguishing the group from the more straightforwardly pop-oriented sound of many earlier Korean idol groups. Member G-Dragon's role as a primary songwriter and producer for the group's material was unusual for K-pop idol groups of that era, which typically relied more heavily on outside professional songwriters and producers, and his creative control gave Big Bang's music a more distinctly personal artistic identity. The group's commercial success helped establish YG Entertainment as one of K-pop's three dominant major labels alongside SM and JYP Entertainment, and Big Bang's fashion-forward public image significantly influenced the broader visual and stylistic direction of K-pop idol group branding throughout the 2010s. Big Bang's sustained commercial success across more than a decade, despite legal controversies affecting individual members later in the group's career, established them as one of the most influential and commercially significant boy groups in K-pop history, directly shaping the genre's sound and visual style for the generation of groups that followed.
