Black's Beach
Black's Beach, tucked beneath the tall sandstone cliffs of Torrey Pines, is San Diego's largest clothing-optional beach and simultaneously one of the most respected big-wave surfing spots in the county, a combination that gives it a genuinely distinct identity among San Diego's beach options. Its position directly below the Torrey Pines Gliderport, where paragliders and hang gliders regularly launch from the cliffs above, adds an additional layer of activity overhead that visitors to the beach below can watch throughout the day, a specific visual feature unique to this stretch of coastline. Access requires either a steep cliffside trail or a longer walk along the sand from neighboring beaches, since no direct road or parking lot serves Black's Beach itself, a deliberate access limitation that has helped keep it less crowded than San Diego's more easily reached beaches despite its well-known reputation. For a San Diego beaches list, Black's Beach is the essential "remote and unconventional" entry — a cliff-backed, clothing-optional beach known equally for its respected big-wave surf and the paragliders launching from the bluffs directly above it.
VS
Sunset Cliffs
Sunset Cliffs, along the Point Loma peninsula, is less a single beach than a dramatic stretch of sandstone bluffs, sea caves, and small pocket beaches accessible via a series of steep trails, drawing visitors primarily for its consistently spectacular ocean sunset views rather than traditional swimming or sunbathing. Its rugged, undeveloped coastline stands in sharp contrast to San Diego's more manicured, infrastructure-heavy beaches, with much of the area protected as Sunset Cliffs Natural Park specifically to preserve the bluffs' natural erosion-carved formations rather than developing them further. The area's consistent, powerful surf breaks have also made it one of San Diego's most respected surf spots among experienced local surfers, though its exposed rocks and strong currents make it considerably less beginner-friendly than the county's calmer, more protected beaches. For a San Diego beaches list, Sunset Cliffs is the essential "cliffs, not sand" entry — a dramatic, undeveloped stretch of coastal bluffs and pocket beaches best known for its sunset views and respected surf breaks rather than a traditional wide, flat beach experience.
