BMW 7 Series
The BMW 7 Series has been BMW's flagship sedan since 1977, and across six generations it's functioned as the brand's rolling technology showcase — the model line where BMW introduces new safety systems, drivetrains, and infotainment before they trickle down to the 5 Series, 3 Series, and the rest of the lineup. Its list of firsts inside the BMW lineup is long: the first BMW with a V12 engine (the E32 750i, 1987), the first with an electronic parking brake and active cruise control, and — with the current G70 generation — BMW's first flagship offered with a fully electric powertrain (the i7) alongside its traditional gasoline and plug-in-hybrid variants, sold from the same factory on the same line. The nameplate has occasionally taken real design risks that split opinion sharply, most notably the Chris Bangle-designed E65 generation launched in 2001, whose "flame surfacing" styling language and unusual trunk lid shape drew intense criticism at launch but is now viewed by many designers as ahead of its time — a rare instance of a flagship luxury sedan being genuinely, deliberately provocative rather than safely conservative. Built at BMW's Dingolfing plant — the company's largest production facility, employing tens of thousands of workers — the 7 Series remains the car BMW uses to prove it can match Mercedes-Benz and, increasingly, a new generation of electric luxury rivals on the same ground: comfort, technology, and driving dynamics all bundled into a single flagship sedan.
VS
Audi A8
The Audi A8 launched in 1994 as Volkswagen Group's first genuine assault on the German flagship-sedan establishment, and it made its mark immediately with an engineering decision none of its rivals had attempted at scale: an entirely aluminum "Audi Space Frame" chassis, which cut weight dramatically versus the steel-bodied Mercedes S-Class and BMW 7 Series of the era and became a defining Audi technology for decades afterward. Quattro all-wheel drive, standard or available across every A8 generation since, became the car's other signature calling card — a flagship luxury sedan built to handle genuinely poor weather and road conditions as capably as a Range Rover, at a time when rear-wheel-drive-only German luxury sedans still struggled meaningfully in snow and ice. The current fourth-generation A8, launched in 2017, pushed further into technology-first territory with a suite of advanced driver-assistance features and — in select markets — Level 3 conditional automation hardware, alongside an all-digital dashboard and touch-based climate and infotainment controls that replaced nearly every physical button in the cabin. Built at Audi's Neckarsulm plant, the same historic site that's assembled Audi and predecessor NSU vehicles since the early 20th century, the A8 has spent three decades as the quietly technical alternative in the German luxury sedan trio — less ostentatious than an S-Class, less overtly sporty than a 7 Series, and consistently the one most likely to be running some genuinely new piece of engineering first.
