Bob Dylan
Bob Dylan won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2016, becoming the first musician ever awarded the honor, a recognition that formally acknowledged his songwriting's literary significance in a way virtually no other popular musician's work had previously received from that specific institution. His decision to perform with electric instrumentation at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival, breaking sharply from his earlier acoustic folk persona, reportedly drew boos from parts of the folk-purist audience and became one of the most significant and controversial moments in the development of folk-rock as a genre. Dylan's socially and politically conscious early-1960s songs, including "Blowin' in the Wind" and "The Times They Are a-Changin'," became foundational anthems of the American civil rights and broader protest movements, establishing him as the defining songwriter of that era's folk revival scene. His continued reinvention across more than six decades of recording, moving through folk, electric rock, country, gospel, and numerous other stylistic periods, has made Dylan the songwriter most frequently cited as the most significant and influential in the history of American popular music.
VS
Leonard Cohen
Leonard Cohen was already an established published poet and novelist in his native Canada before turning to music in his early thirties, and his literary background gave his songwriting a density of language and imagery distinct from most of his singer-songwriter contemporaries. His 1984 song "Hallelujah," largely overlooked upon its original release, became one of the most frequently covered songs in popular music history following later interpretations by Jeff Buckley and other artists, and the song's now-ubiquitous cultural presence stands in stark contrast to its initially modest commercial reception. Cohen's deep, resonant baritone voice, which grew even lower and more weathered across his later career, combined with his consistently dark, spiritually and romantically searching lyrical themes, gave his catalog a distinctive gravity that set him apart from more conventionally melodic singer-songwriters. His final albums, released in his final years including one issued just weeks before his 2016 death, continued directly and unflinchingly addressing mortality, giving Cohen's late-career work an unusually direct meditation on death that critics widely praised as a fitting, deliberate conclusion to his decades-long body of work.
