Bobby Fischer
Bobby Fischer's 1972 World Championship victory over Soviet champion Boris Spassky in Reykjavik, Iceland, dubbed the "Match of the Century," became one of the most politically significant sporting events of the Cold War, framed globally as a direct ideological showdown between the United States and the Soviet Union. Fischer's win ended a 24-year unbroken run of Soviet dominance over the world championship, and the match drew unprecedented mainstream media coverage for a chess event, briefly making Fischer one of the most famous athletes in the world and sparking a surge of American interest in competitive chess that's often called the "Fischer Boom." His subsequent refusal to defend his title against Karpov in 1975, following a dispute over match conditions with the international chess federation, led to Fischer being stripped of his championship without ever losing a game as champion, and he largely disappeared from competitive chess and public life for the following two decades. Fischer's later life was marked by increasingly erratic public statements and legal troubles, including US sanctions violations for playing an unauthorized 1992 rematch against Spassky in the former Yugoslavia, a decline that complicates but hasn't erased his standing as one of the most naturally gifted players the game has ever produced.
VS
Garry Kasparov
Garry Kasparov became the youngest ever undisputed World Chess Champion in 1985, at 22, defeating fellow Soviet Anatoly Karpov after an earlier, unprecedented championship match between the two had been controversially halted without a result the previous year after 48 games. Kasparov held the world's top ranking for a record 255 months, more than any other player before or since, and his rivalry with Karpov across five separate world championship matches through the 1980s and early 1990s is still considered one of the most intense and closely followed rivalries in chess history. His 1997 loss to IBM's Deep Blue supercomputer, following a win in an earlier 1996 match against an earlier version of the machine, became one of the most widely covered moments in the history of human-versus-computer competition, a symbolic marker of computers finally surpassing the best human players at the game. Kasparov's aggressive, attacking playing style and his continued influence as a chess theorist, author, and later political dissident against the Russian government have kept him one of the most publicly recognizable figures the sport has ever produced, well beyond his playing accomplishments alone.
