Bobby Orr
Bobby Orr played most of his career with the Boston Bruins, from 1966 until knee injuries forced a brief, diminished final stretch with the Chicago Blackhawks, and in that time fundamentally redefined what a defenseman could do on the ice — rushing the puck end to end as a primary offensive weapon rather than staying back as a purely defensive presence. Orr remains the only defenseman in NHL history to win the Art Ross Trophy as the league's leading scorer, and he did it twice, in 1970 and again in 1975 — a genuinely singular achievement given how heavily that trophy has otherwise been dominated by forwards for the sport's entire history. He also won the Norris Trophy as the league's best defenseman eight consecutive seasons, from 1968 through 1975, and three Hart Trophies as MVP. Orr led the Bruins to two Stanley Cup championships, in 1970 and 1972, and the 1970 title produced the single most iconic image in NHL history: Orr diving through the air, arms raised, immediately after scoring the championship-winning overtime goal against the St. Louis Blues — a photograph still simply known as "The Goal." Orr's career was cut short by a series of knee injuries that forced his retirement at just 30 years old, robbing the sport of what would likely have been several more historic seasons — a shortened career that, remarkably, still left him with a case as the greatest defenseman, and by some measures the greatest all-around player, the game has ever seen.
VS
Mario Lemieux
Mario Lemieux was drafted first overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1984 and announced himself immediately — he scored on his very first NHL shift, on his very first shot, against the New York Rangers, a start that set the tone for a career that would come to rival Wayne Gretzky's for pure offensive skill, even if injuries and illness kept it shorter. "Super Mario" won two Stanley Cups with Pittsburgh, in 1991 and 1992, taking home the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP both times. He won six Art Ross Trophies as the league's leading scorer despite missing significant stretches of his career to chronic back problems and, in 1993, a Hodgkin's lymphoma diagnosis — he underwent radiation treatment and still won the scoring title that same season, an achievement that remains one of the most remarkable in professional sports history. His career points-per-game average of 1.88 is the highest of any player in NHL history, a rate that reflects just how dominant he was in the seasons injuries and illness didn't take away from him, rather than a career built on volume across a long, uninterrupted run of healthy years. Lemieux's connection to the Penguins didn't end with retirement — he purchased the financially struggling franchise out of bankruptcy in 1999, becoming a player-owner, and as owner presided over the 2005 draft lottery win that brought Sidney Crosby to Pittsburgh, extending his imprint on the franchise well past his playing days.
