Bohemian Rhapsody
Bohemian Rhapsody, released in 2018, dramatizes the story of rock band Queen and particularly frontman Freddie Mercury, and Rami Malek's performance in the lead role, capturing Mercury's flamboyant stage presence and physicality, won him the Academy Award for Best Actor. The film's climactic recreation of Queen's 1985 Live Aid performance, considered one of the greatest live rock performances in history, was meticulously restaged to match the original concert's staging and setlist, and the sequence became one of the film's most widely praised individual achievements. Despite significant box-office and audience success, the film drew notable criticism from some music journalists and critics for altering the actual chronology of Mercury's HIV diagnosis and for softening or simplifying aspects of the band's history and Mercury's personal life for dramatic and commercial purposes. Bohemian Rhapsody became one of the highest-grossing music biopics ever released, demonstrating substantial mainstream commercial demand for musician biographical films, and its box-office success is widely credited with helping spur a subsequent wave of major studio investment in similar music biopic productions.

Lawrence of Arabia
Lawrence of Arabia, directed by David Lean and released in 1962, dramatizes the World War I-era exploits of British officer T.E. Lawrence, who helped organize Arab tribes in a revolt against Ottoman rule, and the film's sweeping desert cinematography set a technical benchmark for large-scale historical epic filmmaking. Peter O'Toole's performance in the title role launched his career, and the film's psychologically complex portrayal of Lawrence, including his ambivalent relationship to violence and his complicated cultural position between British and Arab identities, gave the biopic considerably more moral ambiguity than typical heroic war epics of its era. The film's extensive location filming across the actual Jordanian and Moroccan deserts, using minimal special effects and relying instead on genuine large-scale practical staging of its battle sequences, gave Lawrence of Arabia a physical scale and authenticity that later digitally assisted epics have struggled to replicate with the same tactile realism. Lawrence of Arabia won the Academy Award for Best Picture, and its combination of genuine historical scope, psychological complexity, and technically extraordinary desert cinematography has made it one of the most frequently cited greatest films ever made, regardless of genre.
