Boston Latin School
Boston Latin School, founded in 1635, is the oldest public school in the United States, predating even Harvard University, which was founded the following year partly to help prepare Boston Latin graduates for further education. The school's exam-based admission process and rigorous classical curriculum, historically including mandatory Latin instruction for all students, reflect an educational tradition stretching back to colonial America, making it a genuinely unique link to the earliest history of American public education. Boston Latin's notable alumni include several signers of the Declaration of Independence, including Samuel Adams and John Hancock, along with numerous other prominent historical and contemporary figures across American public life spanning nearly four centuries. Boston Latin School's combination of its status as the oldest public school in the country and its direct historical connection to America's founding generation has made it one of the most historically significant schools in American history.

Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology
Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, commonly known as TJHSST or simply "TJ," opened in 1985 in Alexandria, Virginia, established specifically as a magnet school for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education serving students across Northern Virginia. The school regularly ranks among the top public high schools in the United States in national rankings, and its research-focused curriculum includes dedicated laboratory facilities for specialized fields including astronomy, biotechnology, and robotics uncommon even among other elite public magnet schools. TJ's admissions process has undergone significant public scrutiny and revision in recent years, with Fairfax County Public Schools changing the school's application criteria specifically to address longstanding concerns about the demographic makeup of its admitted student body relative to the broader regional population. Thomas Jefferson High School's combination of its specialized STEM-focused research curriculum and its consistently top national public school rankings has made it one of the most academically prominent magnet high schools in the country.
