Boston Public Garden
The Boston Public Garden was established in 1837 as the first public botanical garden in the United States, laid out on 24 acres adjoining Boston Common by landscape designer George F. Meacham, with the paths and flower beds later refined by city engineer James Slade and forester John Galvin. Its best-known feature came decades after the garden itself: the pedal-powered Swan Boats began operating on the Garden's 4-acre pond in 1877 and have run every year since, making them one of the longest-running tourist attractions in the city. The distinctive suspension bridge crossing that same pond dates to 1867, and every spring the Garden hosts a "Return of the Swans" celebration, complete with a parade and brass band, marking the season's mute swans coming back to the water. The Garden is also dotted with genuine historic monuments rather than purely decorative landscaping — Thomas Ball's equestrian statue of George Washington, unveiled in 1869, anchors one entrance, while the Ether Monument nearby commemorates the first public use of ether anesthesia, a Boston medical milestone with global consequences. For a Boston attractions list, the Public Garden is the essential "slow down in the middle of the city" entry — America's first public botanical garden, still running the same Swan Boats it introduced in 1877 on a pond ringed by monuments most visitors walk past without realizing what they're looking at.

Museum of Fine Arts, Boston
The Museum of Fine Arts was founded in 1870 and originally opened in Copley Square in 1876, before outgrowing that space and relocating to its current Huntington Avenue building in 1909 — a neoclassical structure designed by architect Guy Lowell, fronted by a 500-foot granite facade and organized around a grand central rotunda. The collection itself is enormous: more than 450,000 works of art in total, including 8,161 paintings, enough to rank the MFA among the 20th-largest art museums in the world by public gallery area. One holding in particular sets it apart internationally — the museum houses the largest collection of Japanese art outside Japan itself, roughly 100,000 items spanning 4,000 paintings and over 30,000 ukiyo-e prints. That scale draws real crowds: the MFA attracts more than 1.2 million visitors a year, a number that reflects both the depth of the permanent collection and a steady rotation of major traveling exhibitions. The museum also maintains an academic tie to the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts, keeping it connected to working artists and students rather than functioning purely as a static collection. For a Boston attractions list, the MFA is the essential "a full day, easily" entry — a 150-year-old, 450,000-object collection anchored by the largest Japanese art holdings outside Japan, housed in a Huntington Avenue building it's called home since 1909.
