Brian Shaw
Brian Shaw won the World's Strongest Man competition four times, and his combination of exceptional size, standing 6-foot-8, and genuine technical proficiency across strongman's varied event formats made him one of the most dominant competitors of the 2010s. His sustained rivalry with fellow American strongman champion Hafthor Björnsson and Lithuanian competitor Žydrūnas Savickas throughout the 2010s produced some of the most closely followed competitive strongman events of that decade, as the sport's overall competitive depth continued to grow. Shaw's massive social media following, built through his own YouTube channel documenting his training and competition preparation, made him one of the strongman sport's most commercially significant ambassadors, extending the sport's visibility well beyond its traditional competition broadcasts. His combination of four World's Strongest Man titles and his significant role building the sport's broader online audience has made Shaw one of the most commercially and competitively significant figures in modern strongman competition.
VS
Hafthor Björnsson
Hafthor Björnsson won the World's Strongest Man competition in 2018 and became internationally recognizable for his role portraying "The Mountain" in the television series Game of Thrones, giving him a level of mainstream celebrity recognition unusual for a competitive strongman. His 2020 world record deadlift of 501 kilograms, surpassing Eddie Hall's earlier historic 500-kilogram lift by a single kilogram, extended his rivalry with Hall into one of strongman's most significant ongoing individual competitive storylines. Björnsson's subsequent transition into professional boxing, including his high-profile 2022 exhibition match against Hall settling their long-running rivalry, reflected the same cross-disciplinary athletic ambition several other top strongman competitors have pursued after their primary competitive careers. His combination of a World's Strongest Man title, his record-setting deadlift, and his mainstream television celebrity has made Björnsson one of the most publicly recognizable strongman competitors in the sport's history, extending strongman's visibility to audiences well beyond its traditional competition following.
