Brigham Young University
Brigham Young University, founded in 1875, is owned and operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and its Honor Code, which all students must agree to follow, includes specific dress and grooming standards along with prohibitions on alcohol, tobacco, and premarital sexual relationships. The university's extremely low tuition, subsidized substantially by the LDS Church for both member and non-member students, makes BYU one of the most affordable private research universities in the country, a distinctive funding model tied directly to the church's ownership. BYU's law school and its Marriott School of Business have built strong national reputations, and the university's foreign language programs are exceptionally deep, benefiting from the large proportion of students who've completed two-year church missions abroad and return to campus already fluent in a second language. The university's combination of religious institutional ownership, its strict honor code, and its unusually large body of returning-missionary students with existing foreign language fluency has made BYU one of the most institutionally distinctive large private universities in the country.
VS
Southern Utah University
Southern Utah University, founded in 1897, hosts the Utah Shakespeare Festival, a Tony Award-winning professional theater festival held on campus each summer, giving the university's theater program direct access to a nationally recognized professional performing arts institution operating alongside its academic offerings. The university's business and education programs have built solid regional reputations, and SUU's Cedar City campus, located near several of Utah's most significant national parks, has made the university a draw for students interested in outdoor recreation and parks and recreation management programs. SUU's relatively small size and its close-knit campus culture reflect its position as a smaller regional alternative to Utah's larger public flagship universities, and the school's continued institutional relationship with the Shakespeare Festival has become central to its broader public identity within the state. The university's combination of a genuinely prestigious attached professional theater festival and its proximity to major national parks has made Southern Utah University a distinctive choice among the state's public universities, particularly for students interested in theater or outdoor recreation fields.
